Sitte, Anstand und die soziale Kontrolle von Mädchen: Eine englische Studie
Summary
The author suggests that a woman`s sexuality is central to the way
she is judged in everyday life as well as by the welfare and law enforcement
agencies. The women`s "good reputation" is predominantly determined by
their alleged sexual behaviour, whereas the men`s good reputation refers
to their personality, exploits and their standing in society. The process
of acquiring a restricted identy starts early in the life of the girls;
the author analyses experiences of 15-16 old girls. The function of the
girls‘ verbal abuse ("slag") is to force them to submit voluntarily to
the existing structures of patriarchal sex-gender relationships. The girls
have first to be a passive and compliant recipient of the boys‘ sexual
wishes, deny the own sexuality and channel it eventually into the bonds
of a "legitimate" but infavorable marriage.
